"Descent": A CHOREOGREPHY BY NOÉMIE LAFRANCE

Dear loves, friends, and acquaintances,

I am excited to announce that we are remounting . We are developing a final version of the piece to prepare for touring and for the upcoming production of a16mm dance film. This remount project was made possible through a generous grant from the Canada Council of the Arts, and support from the Quebec Government House, New York and the Rodney White Foundation. For you who have not yet seen it, and for you who want to see how it will develop, "Descent" is a site-specific choreography performed by 12 female dancers around the architecture of a spiraling stairwell . It will take place in the original site : Stairwell B of the Clock Tower court building located at 50 Lafayette Street (corner of Leonard St.) in Tribecca. From the 1st to the 23rd of November, 2002 for 4 consecutive weeks: Wednesdays through Saturdays starting at 7:00, 8:00 and 9:00 PM.

In this production we will be showing an enhanced version of the piece extended to 40 minutes in length. The piece has evolved both in its relation to the audience and its use of space. We are developing more extensive theatrical narratives and visuals exploring desire in women's domestic realm. The piece will also feature the collaboration of exceptional French dancer Celina Chaulvin who performed with Martha Graham, Momix and Ballet Preljocaj, and the trapeze artist Natalie Agee on a single rope executing a contemporary dance solo. The cast of 10 women includes original dancers Emma Stein, Rosario Ordonez and Martha Williams and new dancers Celeste Hastings, Ori Lenkinski, Eliza Carollo, Aya Shibahara, Camille Dieterle, and Galina Dorodnova. We are excited to re-explore the original score by Brooks Williams with vocals by Shelley Hirsch and sound installation by Maxime De La Rochefoucauld. The piece is being documented by photographer Claire Le Pichon and will offer a more elaborate theatrical lighting design by Timothey Coffey. Following this production, we are planning a dance film production collaboration with filmaker Karen Mirza in the summer of 2002.
